Stones, crystals and gemstones are believed to hold spiritual properties which can benefit us in various ways. Crystals and gemstones can be worn as jewellery, carried with us or placed around our homes and workspaces. One way of enjoying the benefit of crystals is to wear them as jewellery, such as crystal necklaces and bracelets.

Types of Crystal Jewellery

The most popular, affordable and often readily available forms of crystal jewellery are made from either quartz or glass. Quartz crystals are wonderful conductors and amplifiers, which means that they can channel universal energy down through the base of the crystal and release it at a lower level, stimulating a flow of energy through your subtle energy bodies. Quartz crystals can simply enhance our connection to universal energy.

Glass is not quite as effective in this regard - however, glass jewellery can have some benefits which quartz cannot provide. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful ways of making a crystal jewellery item is to make a pendant from a natural stone, such as rose quartz.

Rose quartz is one of the most popular types of crystal and it has been used since ancient times. It comes from the family called 'Quartz', which has another very important variety known as 'Amethyst'. The metaphysical properties of rose quartz and amethyst are almost identical. Rose quartz is a soft pink colour and has a beautiful translucent quality to it. These crystals can be found in Madagascar, Mexico, Russia and several other locations around the world.

Amethyst is a purple-pink variety of quartz crystal only available from Namibia in Africa. All types of quartz-crystal are popular for jewellery, but amethyst is a particularly spiritual stone. When worn as a pendant, the stone can amplify the energy of anything you wish to connect with - meditation, chanting, prayer and so on.

How to Use Crystal

How do we go about using crystals? One way is to wear jewellery containing crystals or stones that have the desired effect. Firstly you should charge your jewellery by letting it sit under moonlight (or sunlight if it's not an opal or pearls) for 4 hours, holding it over your heart (or third eye) and visualising the gemstone's energy flowing into you. When you feel ready, wear the jewellery. You should never mix your crystals with others as this can create negative energies so try to only wear one at a time.

Charging your crystals means that the energy of the crystal is heightened or activated so that you receive its full benefit. Crystals can be charged by the light of the moon, direct sunlight, a crystal lamp, a candle flame or even through being placed in saltwater. Placing your stones in natural daylight makes them work harder and more effectively for you.

Crystals and gemstones should also be cleaned regularly, this means to get rid of any stagnant or negative energy that your stones may pick up throughout the day. To cleanse your crystals you can either leave them outside under a full moon (or in direct sunlight if it's not an opal) until the next full moon. Or you can place them in a glass bowl with coarse sea salt (it must be coarse) and leave them overnight (this method is better for larger crystals like tumbled stones).

Charging Your Crystal Jewellery

But, how do you know if your stone is charging? What does it mean for a crystal to be charged? There are a few tell-tale signs that show your crystals have been properly 'charged'.

Firstly, the colour of the stone will appear brighter and more vibrant. The stone may feel warmer to the touch too. Another sign of a properly charged stone is finding shiny specks or sparkles on your jewellery. You can also blow on your crystals and if they respond by producing a high-pitched sound, they are charged!

Secondly, you should feel a stronger sense of energy coming from the stone or stones. This could happen almost immediately or it may take a few weeks. If you feel absolutely nothing at all, the crystal probably needs to be cleansed and/or recharged. If your crystals are not working as well as they should be, don't despair! Even the most powerfully charged stones can become less effective if not cared for properly.

The best time to charge your stones is when the moon is full. The rising sun in the morning or setting sun in the evening can also be used to 'energise' your crystals. If you don't have a specific place outside where you can sit comfortably with your jewellery, try using a crystal lamp or a candle. I wear my rose quartz necklaces at night and occasionally throughout the day when I'm around water (my power spots). I find that my amethysts are more powerful on new or full moon days.

Charging your jewellery with the energy of the sun is a great way to give it an extra boost. If you don't have easy access to direct sunlight, leave your jewellery outside in the shade for 4 hours on a sunny day. Or, if you live somewhere that has a lot of light pollution, try using a crystal lamp.

Crystal jewellery is a beautiful and powerful piece of jewellery that can help to improve your health and wellbeing. Hopefully, this article has shown you how to properly cleanse and charge your crystal jewellery so that they give you the best energy possible!
